This installation utilized a box of mirrors to create a kaleidoscope effect of enclosed red, blue and yellow LED lights. The LEDs were connected to spools that were wound and unwound with pulleys that the viewer/participant moved with ropes. This created a dynamic light environment within the box, which also included two microcameras allowing the interior to be displayed on the walls of the gallery using projectors.

The pulley wheels inside the box were also connected to potentiometers that translated the movement into MIDI messages. These messages were used to alter the synthesizers creating the soundscape in the room in real-time.

I have always loved kaleidoscopes and had planned on creating a piece that utilized a box of mirrors to build one. On a summer visit to Chicago, I helped my mother install a new cloths line. The childish sense of joy I had when testing out the new pulleys inspired the interaction used in this work.
