About
Joe Abbati is a creative technologist, educator, and electronic musician who has made a profound impact on both the academic and electronic music worlds. Formerly based in Miami, he served as a faculty member at the prestigious Frost School of Music for over two decades. His work spanned various roles, from shaping the Music Engineering Technology Program and teaching foundational program-specific classes to designing cutting-edge courses such as ""Developing XR Audio Applications in Unity/C#."" His expertise in electronic music, studio recording, engineering, programming and sound design for gaming combine to distinguish him as a forward-thinking educator.
In 2012, he co-founded the Electronic Instrument program at Frost, a groundbreaking initiative that redefined the role of laptops as non-acoustic instruments. As Director of the Electronic Instrument Studio, Joe cultivated an innovative environment where students explore new realms of electronic music performance, improvisation, and composition. He strongly believes that the convergence of real-time audio synthesis and signal processing, combined with innovative interfaces, creates a powerful instrument, allowing musicians to shape audio, video, lighting, and even physical phenomena through expressive mastering of technology. A veteran of the video game industry, Joe composed original scores, programmed, and crafted sound design for more than 30 published titles. He was also an accomplished live performer, bringing his original electronic music sets to renowned festivals across the globe, from Brazil’s Universo Parelllo to Florida’s Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival. His deep passion for electronic music production, dating back to 1993, along with his constant engagement with emerging technologies, make Joe a one-of-a-kind artist and educator.
